“I tried it [yoga], and it completely changed my life. And, first of all it made me so much stronger. Like I could never lift my arms above my head, now I can. I can stand now. Not for as long as I want to, but I’m sure that’ll happen. And I just always wonder if I could have done that from when I was five years old, what would the difference be? Because when you watch me doing standup a decade ago and now, it’s night and day. It’s a completely different body, different coordination, much less shaking, much less pain. And so I really advocate parents with young children with cerebral palsy, start doing yoga at six months because you can.”

"...because I can't sit still..." "I move because I can and so I will. I love to play four square. I feel happy when I move and so I'll never stop!" "I think you should move becasue if you don't move one day you won't be able to even get up. I feel like if I don't exercise I can't do anything. When I move I feel HAPPY! I like biking because it moves my whole body." Photo credit: @brettkirkland10
"The way I move is by doing lots of swimming. Swimming makes me feel happy. At swimming I am active for 1 and a half hours and the thing is I like being active. If you're not active when you are young, when you get older you won't be able to move very well. I like how my arms and legs feel when I am swimming. I don't feel lazy and it just makes me want to move some more." "Physical activity can get you going when you are immobilized. Get action in your life, and don't just talk about it. Get into the arena!" "I am challenged by two autoimmune conditions which make breathing difficult and mobility limited. It's vital to maintain the capabilities I have - can't afford to lose any of my necessary independence. Move it or lose it!! In addition, my mother is 90, has beaten breast cancer thrice and bladder cancer twice! "I need to get off the couch. I just turned 56 and realized I do not want anybody taking care of me as I age. Would like to live until I die - not exist until I die. Time to get with it and get healthy." "I suffer from osteoarthritis. I am slowly losing movement in my joints and I am on medication to control pain. I find when I do not exercise I stiffen up. Exercise helps me keep my weight in check, which in turn is better for my joints; less weight, less stress on my joints. I also find I am happier and have more energy. With arthritis - move the joints or lose the mobility." "In 2003, a few months after I got married, I was diagnosed with a degenerative neurological disorder. They started teaching occupational therapy to live in my "new" body, and flyers of all the assistive service I was going to need. |
