"Exercise allows me to sweat out all the gunk within, to release the angst and turmoil, to tap into the joy inside me. Suddenly life is exciting again. I have goals and the energy to work towards them.

"I love working out. I don't go to therapy, and I think that's because I get endorphins from exercise. It's such a powerful tool for me mentally. I know that working out is not the path for me to be skinny. For my body type, that entails eating well and making healthy choices. Working out is a way for me to have mental strength, and now, with a kid, it's also time that I have just for myself and to focus on my body." "For me, outdoor exercise is simply an escape hatch. My running shoes are a trap door I can sink my feet into whenever life gets too chaotic, which it consistently does. "I would really say the most important why - I want to set an example for my son. He loves watching me workout in the living room. He is learning now more then ever what his mom does. I want to make sure what he is seeing is going to help him set healthy lifestyle habits in the future." "I barre for the other benefits in my life. I didn't take good care of my body when it was new, so I have lots of aches to deal with, but I still like to stay active in my work and my play. Barre helps me with my flexibility, core strength, balance, and proprioception to maximize my performance in other sports. Except for the morning after class, I feel much better for my time at Barre. I started because I wanted to be in better shape and feel stronger. I keep on because the variety of exercises we do during the class: strength training, stretching, weights works out all the muscles in my body. I really enjoy how Barre is a near-perfect mix of yoga, Pilates, ballet training, strength training, balance, and endurance." “I think it [quitting smoking] was the physical activity. It happens organically. By week five, we’re expected to set a date for quitting. I still smoked at the beginning but the time between running and having a cigarette got longer and longer. You feel good so you don’t think about having a cigarette, so that helped.” “After the [Boston Marathon] bombing, I was struggling with extreme anxiety and running calmed me down. It made me feel functional instead of disabled. It changed my mind as much as my body... "Being healthy and in good shape became of utmost importance to me. How I really changed was when I broke my foot. The first thought that crossed my mind was "how will I exercise?" An operation later, I found myself taking membership of a club only because of its swimming pool; 6 weeks of rehab later, I found my way back to weights and cardio. I became a 5k runner after that injury. When I was 38, I got pregnant. From a happy weight of 52 kg, I was up to 74 kg at the time of delivery. Six months later, I got back to my pre-pregnancy weight. I ran 2 half marathons. K."In my field of work, I meet a lot of mums who talk about their dreams of being healthy or going back to pre-baby size or even running in the Suva Marathon but they don't believe they can do any of this because now they are mothers. So I run to inspire them. If I, as a local mum can participate in the Suva Marathon, so can they." |
